2024 PlantNetwork Plant Records Meeting at Ness Botanical Gardens

2024 PlantNetwork Plant Records Meeting at Ness Botanical Gardens

On the 26th September 2024, we attended, for the 2nd year running. The annual Plant Records meeting of PlantNetwork. This year it took place at Ness Botanical Gardens, University of Liverpool, Neston Road, Ness, Cheshire CH64 4AY.

PlantNetwork is a training and networking organisation that has been supporting gardens and horticulturists throughout Britain and Ireland for more than 25 years.

As an official sponsor, not only do we get to support a registered charity.  But we get an invaluable insight into some of the challenges faced by some of the UK and Irelands most treasured Gardens.  To see a list of the members and to find out more, including how to join visit https://plantnetwork.org/about/

This year’s meeting will be made even more special, as we have been working with Curator, Nick Lightfoot and Plant Records Officer, Mike Roberts for some years now.  So it gave us the perfect opportunity for us to meet up with them again.  And of course to get some images of our products in their fabulous surroundings https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/ness-gardens/

The event was well attended.  It was held in the delightful conference room which overlooked the stunning gardens.  Our product display boards, looked at home in the bright and airy surroundings.

The day began with an Ice breaker quiz.  Where specimens from the Garden, where brought in to test the participants knowledge of the flora (and fauna) living in the Garden.

One unexpected visitor to our table was this “Pale Tussock moth caterpillar” that was found enjoying proceedings from one of the branches…

Plant Records Office, Mike Roberts shared a brief history of the Garden.  And also, gave us an insight into the challenges that they face when Mapping the Garden…

After a brief tour of the Garden, where I took the opportunity to photograph a number of our products.

It was our turn to help assist in the mapping of previously untouched beds.  Thankfully, a couple of the trees in our patch gave us a helping hand.

We particularly liked the Rock Garden.

But our  favourite image was this one, taken in one of the green houses at the bottom of the Garden.  Which we believe is out of bounds for regular visitors…

We thoroughly enjoyed our day and we look forward to supporting and taking part in the 2025 event.

It was our turn to help assist in the mapping of previously untouched beds.  Thankfully, a couple of the trees in our patch gave us a helping hand. The plastic engraving laminate tree labels in this image, measure 100mm x 75mm and can be purchased from as blank labels, to allow for your own engraving. https://www.gardenlabelling.co.uk/shop/blank-garden-labels/100-x-75mm-blank-tree-label  Or, as Engraved Tree labels https://www.gardenlabelling.co.uk/shop/engraved-garden-labels/100-x-75mm-engraved-tree-label We particularly liked the Rock Garden. In fact,  it was at this point in the tour.  That we had an idea to make some labels that can be pushed directly into the ground, in a colour and size, that would blend nicely with the ground covering and low growing plants varieties and rocks. So we designed our Pointed Labels.  They can be purchased either as Blanks, so you can engrave them yourself here  or buy them ready engraved here. But our favourite image was this one, taken in one of the green houses at the bottom of the Garden. Which we believe is out of bounds for regular visitors… These Rhododendrons are pictured with engraved plant labels, measuring 75mm x 50mm x 1.5mm.  They can be found at https://www.gardenlabelling.co.uk/shop/engraved-garden-labels/75-x-50mm-engraved-plant-label.  They are displayed using our 50mm plant label holder, 200mm stem length https://www.gardenlabelling.co.uk/shop/plant-label-holders/50x200mm-plant-label-holder These labels can also be bought without engraving.  Ready for you to engrave yourself or, to be used as with printed sticky labels.  See https://www.gardenlabelling.co.uk/shop/blank-garden-labels/75-x-50mm-blank-plant-label We thoroughly enjoyed our day and we look forward to supporting and taking part in the 2025 event.
